[English Practice Memo]
We live in a cynical world. When I saw this scene, I couldn’t agree more.
Jerry Maguire is categorized as a romantic comedy. Still, from my perspective, it’s more like a life-seeking movie.
I have been there before, so I can understand why Jerry decides to confront himself in the middle of the night. He feels comfortable because it’s just like he has become his father’s son again.
However, this sudden impulse won’t last. There are always choices and costs. Whatever you choose, it always comes at a cost.
In the next scene, he was fired by his underling, and there is nobody who cares for him even though they almost applauded for him in the previous moment.
It reminds me that we really live in a cynical world. If you lose your job and title, then who will you be?
These are all questions I pondered in my last job, which was well-paid with good benefits. Still, I was just a cog in the machine.
The achievements and fulfillment were too few to dispel the negative thinking. Eventually, I had to make a big decision — to leave the company.
However, doing the right thing matters. In reality, there are no absolute rights or wrongs; there are only perspectives and positions.
Life is like an RPG game. You will have to make difficult decisions. After you’ve felt the pain, understood the pain, and known the pain, you will put yourself in others’ shoes. And in that moment, you will realize that even though we’re living in a cynical world, there are still good things out there if we observe carefully.
And we are what we choose.
